About Our Lady of Aparecida

This holiday honours Our Lady of Aparecida, the patron saint of Brazil. According to tradition, in 1717 fishermen in the Paraíba do Sul river pulled up a small clay statue of the Virgin Mary in their nets, followed by a large catch of fish. The day became a national public holiday in 1980. The same date is also celebrated as Children's Day.

Traditions

Large numbers of pilgrims travel to the National Shrine in Aparecida, in the state of São Paulo, where the statue is kept and special Masses are held. Because 12 October is also Children's Day, many families mark the date with gifts and activities for children.
