About Juneteenth National Independence Day
Juneteenth, on 19 June, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On 19 June 1865, Union Army troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people there were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Long celebrated in Black communities, it became a federal holiday in 2021.
Traditions
Celebrations include community festivals, parades, readings of historical documents, music, and family gatherings and cookouts. Many events focus on African American history, culture and achievement, as well as education about slavery and its legacy.
