About Washington's Birthday
Officially named Washington's Birthday, this federal holiday honors George Washington, commander of the Continental Army and the first President of the United States, who was born in February 1732. Since a 1968 law moved several holidays to Mondays, it has been observed on the third Monday of February. It is widely known as Presidents' Day.
Traditions
The popular name Presidents' Day reflects a broader recognition of past presidents, and some states also honor Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is also in February. The long weekend is associated with retail sales, and some schools and communities hold history lessons or patriotic events.
